About Our Project

There still remains large gaps in research on these little cats and our projects aims at trying to fill these. Supporting research both ex situ and in situ is of utmost importance to us. Working with both international and regional stakeholders we have been able to establish research requirements that will aid in the conservation of this species.

DNA sampling of cats in captivity is taking place in order to build a data base to ensure strong genetic pools and avoid bottlenecking of the species. DNA sampling will now be standard practice on all cats in situ and ex situ. This will help us understand species diversity as well as determining if there are sub species of Black - Footed Cats.

A central database for all information pertaining to Black - Footed Cats will be created and managed to ensure that all data is available to individuals working with the species as well as ensuring that we are able to correlate data.

Improving welfare and captive husbandry for the species will continue with guidelines being published and continued behaviour studies on the species.

In situ work on population numbers ad densities are being expanded with the hope of future releases and collaring of cats in areas where they have not been study.

Infectious disease components will be worked on with clinical sampling standards for all Black - Footed Cats in situ and ex situ, with the hope of finding ways to reduce the risks of these in the populations.

Helping support our project will ensure that these initiatives can continue to grow and succeed.
